She's a Kindergartener

Wow! I am sitting here digesting this first week of school, with many more to come. I am thankful to say that Evie is loving her class, her teacher, and her new classmates!

  • Evie wakes up at about 6am every morning, without an alarm. She makes her bed, gets dressed in her school uniform, makes her Honeynut Cheerios with almond milk, turns on her current favorite Netflix cartoon (usually My Little Pony), brushes her teeth and her hair, and gets her backpack ready for another day at school. She does all of this without being asked, because she is so excited about being in school. We asked her what changed (as opposed to the common 'fights' to get her to get around in the mornings). She responded, "I'm growing up. I want to do things on my own now." And Mama softly sighs and smiles.

  • Evie likes us to drop her off at the playground right outside her classroom. Today, her friend, Chloe, was waiting at the gate looking for Evie. :)

  • Evie's classmates call her Genavieve. Her teacher calls her Evie. Evie has now decided to write her name 'Genavieve'. However, at home she is still Evie - and to Momma, 'Evie Grace'. This will never change.

  • Evie was given special candy (along with two other classmates) for her handwriting. She has very pretty penmanship.

  • Evie is learning to stand up for herself. A girl in her class has repeatedly forcefully taken Evie's water bottle and has drunk her water. After many discussions, and different attempts at dealing with the situation kindly, Evie has learned to keep her water out of reach and has successfully said, "No, this is my water and I'm not allowed to share it with you." :)

  • Evie loves taking her own lunch to school. One of her new friends, Julianna, also has a dairy issue and they sit together at lunch.

  • On Evie's first day of school, she was given an apple at breakfast. When she bit into it, her bottom tooth became loose! Her very first loose tooth and her very first day of school! She was SO excited!

  • I finally figured out the best way to pick Evie up from school. I have only run into one other parent who speaks English, so it took me some time (and lots of trial and error) to figure out where to be and when in order to pick Evie up without waiting for half an hour. Mama's learning, too. ;)

  • Evie has mentioned several times how frustrated she is with the 'silly kids' in her class who won't listen or obey her teacher. The students are given three warnings and then have to put their noses to the wall. On Tuesday she came home and said, "Ms. Wade had a hard day today and had to yell a lot because the silly kids in my class were disobedient." Evie is also bothered by the boys being mean to the girls. She said that the boys are very mean to all the other girls besides herself and her couple of girl friends. I asked her why she thought that the boys were not being mean to her and she said, "The boys know that I am nice so they are nice to me. But I'm still not happy that they are mean to the other girls. I try to tell them to be nice, but they won't listen." She is growing up so, so fast.

I do not have enough words to describe how proud I am of Evie. She has been ready for school for a long time, but during these past couple of weeks we have seen a dramatic change in her behavior and maturity. I am having a hard time dealing with the fact that I will not get to know how she spends all of her time while she is at school. She shares quite a bit with me, but it is just not the same as knowing every detail. I am learning to soak up the time we do have. I do not want to take it for granted!
